Ernestine Gray, beloved matriarch, mother, grandmother, and friend, peacefully departed this life on June 11, 2026, at the age of 82.

Born June 25, 1943, in Greenwood, Mississippi, to Elizabeth Sutton and Elza Hughes, Sr. Ernestine experienced profound loss at just one year old when her mother was called home. Through God's grace, Virginia Hughes lovingly stepped in to help raise Ernestine and her siblings, providing the foundation of faith and love that would shape the remarkable woman she became.

As a young girl, Ernestine relocated to Chicago, Illinois, where a childhood friendship with Recard Augustus Gray, Sr. blossomed into the love of her life. United in marriage on October 14, 1958, they built a beautiful life rooted in faith, family, and unconditional devotion. To the world she was Mom, Gramma, and Gigi — but to Recard, she would always be his beloved "Periwinkle."

Together they were blessed with eight children: Lynn (Larry), Lorrie (Horatio), Letitia (Samuel), Lorez, Recard Gray, Jr. (Dina), Dr. Edmond Gray (Neesheka), Richard Gray (Christina), and Donnovan Gray (Dawn). Her love multiplied beautifully across five generations, leaving behind 37 grandchildren, 74 great-grandchildren, and 9 great-great-grandchildren — a legacy as rare and extraordinary as the woman herself.

Professionally, Ernestine served with distinction as a Loan Officer at Continental Bank of Chicago. Yet no career achievement brought her greater pride than her role as wife, mother, and matriarch. She poured her greatest gifts — love, wisdom, generosity, and hospitality — into her family and all who entered her world. Those who knew Ernestine knew life was never dull in her presence. Elegant, funny, outspoken, and fiercely independent; she had a gift for lighting up any room. Known affectionately as the "Highway Gypsy," she embraced life with an adventurous spirit — loving motorcycles, road trips, and the freedom of the open road. With her tattoos, signature gold jewelry, and unmistakable confidence, Ernestine was unapologetically, beautifully herself, and that authenticity drew people to her throughout her life.

Her greatest joy was gathering family together. Whether at a holiday celebration, a backyard barbecue, or one of the beloved "Gray Days" at the park, she believed the best memories were made around a table filled with food, laughter, and love. Her famous pineapple pie with graham cracker crust became a cherished family tradition, and nothing made her happier than watching generations share a meal and create memories together.

Though direct and never shy about speaking her mind, everything Ernestine did came from a deep place of love. She celebrated every accomplishment, encouraged through every challenge, and never missed an opportunity to say how proud she was. Her kindness, generosity, and unwavering devotion made everyone feel welcomed and valued.

A steadfast woman of faith, Ernestine leaned on the Serenity Prayer and the words of Proverbs 3:5-6 — trusting God's direction through every season of life. That grace and resilience defined her journey from beginning to end. Ernestine was preceded in death by her husband, Recard Sr., her parents, and her siblings: Irene Scott, Priscilla Phillips, Elza Hughes, Jr., Helen Johnson, Samuel Hughes, and Betty Lou. She leaves behind her eight children, five generations of descendants, lifelong friend Arletha (Lee) Duckett of more than seventy years, beloved godchildren Marcus and Nicole, and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends.

Her laughter, strength, and spirit live on in every gathering, every shared recipe, and every memory that begins with the words — "Remember when Gramma..."
